A local church has exciting plans for an abandoned big-box store.

Nearly a decade after the closure of the Kohl’s on Holcomb Bridge Road, Eagles Nest Church is investing $28 million to help bring the ghosted building back to life.

The project will transform roughly 80,000 square feet of former retail space into a multipurpose venue for worship, meetings, graduations, weddings, conferences and other large gatherings.

“We did not simply see an empty building. We saw possibility,” said Pastor Lee Jenkins, the founder and senior pastor of Eagles Nest Church who added the new facility will offer seating for more than 1,000 people.

“This is about taking a space that had gone quiet and giving it a new life and new purpose. We are building a ‘nest’ where people can worship on Sunday, but also a place where this community can come together and celebrate major moments 365 days a year. That is what makes this investment so meaningful.”

The grand opening is set for Sunday, Sept. 6.
