What is Baptism?

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation. It represents Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, symbolizing how we move from death to life when we put our trust in Him. When we are baptized, we boldly declare that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and we are committed to following Him.

Baptism is…

  • A response to receiving the gospel and making Jesus the Lord of your life.

  • A reminder that we are united with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • A picture of being fully immersed in Jesus and covered by His grace.

  • A way to give God glory and share His goodness with others.

  • A sign of the covenant relationship we have with Christ.

Baptism doesn’t save us, but it is a beautiful and powerful symbol of our new life in Jesus. The Bible shows us why baptism matters and how it connects us to God’s plan.

Who Should Get Baptized?

Baptism is for anyone who has made a personal decision to follow Jesus. The Bible tells us that those who accepted the message of Christ were baptized (Acts 2:41). If you have given your life to Jesus, baptism is your next step.

Why Should You Get Baptized?

Baptism is an act of obedience to Christ. Jesus commanded His followers to be baptized (Matthew 28:19-20). It is a symbol of the cleansing of sin and the new life we have in Him (Romans 6:4). Baptism marks our commitment to Christ and reflects the transformation He has made in our lives.

Jesus’ Baptism

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’”—Matthew 3:16-17

Jesus, though sinless, was baptized by John the Baptist as a powerful example for all believers to follow.

John’s Preaching on Baptism

“John came, baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.”—Mark 1:4

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance, demonstrating that baptism represents turning away from sin and stepping into a new life with Christ.

The Great Commission

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”—Matthew 28:19

Jesus commanded His followers to baptize new believers, showing us that baptism is an act of obedience to Christ.

The Day of Pentecost

“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”—Acts 2:38

After hearing the gospel, about 3,000 people were baptized on the same day. Baptism was their immediate response to accepting Jesus.

The Ethiopian Eunuch

“As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?’”—Acts 8:36

This story reminds us that once we believe in Jesus, baptism is the natural next step.

Paul’s Baptism

“Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized.”—Acts 9:18

Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, encountered Jesus and was transformed. His baptism was the beginning of his mission to spread the gospel.
